Today, March 3, 2018, is the UN World Wildlife Day, and this year’s theme is Big cats: Predators under threat. Snow Leopards like tigers, lions, jaguars, pumas, leopards, cheetahs, and clouded leopards are all facing threats to the survival of their species.
And there is so much you can do to help, spread the word, organize big cats awareness day at your organizations. It is estimated that only 200 snow leopards exist in Pakistan’s northern mountains, including the Hindu Kush, Himalayan, Karakoram and Pamir Mountains across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Poaching for their furs, retaliatory killing for their attacks on livestock and decreased number of prey species (Markhor), habitat fragmentation a climate change making their future survival uncertain.
